A case of Alabama Foot Rot was reported in Penrhiwfer, Rhondda in late January 2018.

This disease is rare but extremely serious disease of dogs. The cause has not yet been discovered but most affected dogs have a history of access to damp, muddy, often forested areas. There is no vaccine available and no specific treatment. The disease starts as sores or ulcers on the feet and in many cases progresses rapidly to kidney failure. It is often fatal.

Our best advice is to avoid walking your dog in damp muddy areas and to wash and clean your pet thoroughly should her or she become muddied during exercise. If you notice any sores or ulcers on your dog’s feet please arrange an appointment with us so that, hopefully, we can rule out this disease.

Please note this is a very rare disease but do be aware of it.
